April Passenger Traffic Reveals Upward Trend at Orlando International Airport
ORLANDO, FL. – In April, Orlando International Airport (MCO) cracked the 3 million total passenger mark for the second month in a row with over 3.2 million travelers. That is a 2,000 percent increase over April of 2020.
“Aviation is returning to the skies and our traffic is headed in the right direction,” says Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “April provided us with a much needed sense of stability, indicating that our current rate of growth is sustainable.”
Contributing to the growth, the Easter holiday travel period, which saw some of the strongest numbers since the start of the pandemic. More than 207,000 passengers were screened for Easter 2021 travel as compared to 12,000 last year.
April Statistical Data:
- For the month, domestic traffic climbed more than 1,900 percent with over 3,190,967 passengers in April.
- While still significantly trailing pre-pandemic levels, international traffic jumped nearly 2,900 percent from last year with 84,676 total passengers for the month.
- Overall, combined traffic was up almost 2,000 percent with 3,275,643 passengers for the month.
- Calendar year-to-date, MCO’s domestic traffic is up 1 percent over last year while international traffic is down 80.5 percent.
Strong domestic demand in recent months is hopefully a precursor of the anticipated recovery in international markets. International passenger numbers should start to gradually improve with the limited resumption of Lufthansa’s transatlantic flights between Orlando and Germany along with new international service from Viva Air to Colombia.
Latest Passenger Traffic Update: This past weekend, June 11-13, was a record setter at MCO. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the TSA screened more passengers at Orlando International than prior to the pandemic.
